About the Internet for Seniors by Shawn Parker
Jr
Senior citizens are ready to learn and embrace
the Internet. Older Americans are learning to discover the wonderful world of the Internet. Tried of being left
behind by their friends and families who use face book, Windows Media Players, Google Search and a wealth of
information they can obtain for themselves.
The Nielsen survey of 2009 found that senior citizens who a now actively using the
Internet has increased by 55 percent. The number of senior citizens was ll.3 million in 2004; now in 2009 that
figure is l7.5 million. Even the ones that are using the media the time spent on the computer have increased from
52 hours to 58 hours a month.
The many seniors who are attending classes are enjoying their newfound knowledge of
being able to use this new technology. No longer afraid of using this electronic devise and of maneuvering the
mouse seems to empower them. Some have had computer in their homes for a few years, but have only used them to play
games on or just was to scare to touch it. More and more seniors are beginning to understand that is the 21st
century if you don't have a working knowledge of the computers you are truly behind the times. They no longer want
to be left behind.
The more the Internet technology spreads, the less afraid they have become. They are
more interest in getting more and more information. They don't want to feel incompetent; it's new and can be
confusing at times. Enrolling in computer classes, such as private classes, senior citizen centers, your local
university or the local library will give them more confidents.
Shawn Henry, an outreach coordinator for the World Wide Web Consortium, says that
designers are working to improve the experience for older users. Some of the improvements are: bolder color
contrasts, adjust the font sizes and transcripts of pod-casts. The people in design the Internet know that it is
just good business to help the senior citizen to under stand and to enjoy the computer experience.
The Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project, 71 percent of the
seniors use the Internet for shopping, while 38 percent go on line in their 2009 study.
